HOPE MILLS, N.C. — Three armed men forced their way into a home on the 5900 block of Baggett Lane in Hope Mills late Sunday, authorities said.

The homeowner, 25-year-old Melissa Ann Lester, told detectives she and four friends had cooked out earlier and were sitting in the living room at about 11:25 p.m. Sunday when the men entered the home wearing black ski masks and brandishing guns.

Lester’s dog gave chase and was shot and killed by the men, authorities said. No other injuries were reported.

The case remains under investigation.
