DMV manager resigns in wake of criminal charges
A state Division of Motor Vehicles district manager resigned Monday, three days after being charged with buying stolen riding lawnmowers.

Bill Toman, 51, of 1769 Seabrook School Road in Fayetteville, was arrested in Duplin County and was charged with felony possession of stolen goods, obstruction of justice and misuse of confidential information.
An arrest warrant said Toman bought three lawnmowers, valued in excess of $10,000 total, even though he had reasonable grounds to believe they were stolen. The obstruction of justice charge stemmed from an attempt to impede a criminal investigation.
Toman was the Fayetteville district manager of the DMV's Bureau of License and Theft. Following his arrest, he was placed on investigatory leave with pay.
His lawyer faxed a letter of resignation to the DMV on Monday, officials said. He had worked with the Bureau of License and Theft since January 2006.
