Posted — UpdatedAs regular Go Ask Mom readers know, I'm a fan of a little (or big) treat now and then.
This locally owned and incredibly popular business boasts melt-in-your-mouth doughnuts, along with a menu of savory items, including sandwiches on bagels or biscuits, coffee and a bar. It's hard to believe that it all started as a tricycle-powered doughnut stand not too long ago.
My crew got there on Thursday around 1:30 p.m. and there still was a line of five or seven people in front of us. But it moved swiftly and the wait gave my girls some time to make their doughnut selection.
Thursday's menu had eight doughnuts - four cake and four yeast. We picked an apple cider cake doughnut and two yeast doughnuts - the strawberry lemonade and chocolate sprinkles.
My 10-year-old loved the apple cider doughnut - a moist creation with just the right amount of sugar and spice. My five-year-old and I were more partial to the yeast doughnuts. They were light and airy, not greasy tasting at all. The strawberry lemonade glaze was sweet and tart. The chocolate sprinkles was the best version of this classic kid favorite that I've ever tasted.
And the price made it all even sweeter. The doughnuts range in price between just $1 and $2 - on par with the big doughnut makers out there, but worlds apart as far as quality.
We'll be back.
Monuts Donuts is at 1002 Ninth St. in Durham. It's open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday. This is a pretty informal place, great for kids. Customers order at the counter. There's plenty of seating (at least there was when we were there).
