Destination: Kader's French Bakery in Raleigh
There's a foodie scene in the Triangle, and we hear a lot about the openings and closings of new restaurants and other eating establishments. A nine-year-old girl told me about this one.

"Everything is, like, $2.50, and it is amazing!" she raved (or something like that). She went on to praise everything from little pies and cookies to pastries and bread and also these things, she said, called "millefeuille."
That's when I perked up. Actually, I perked up somewhere around "$2.50" and "amazing." But I knew we'd go when she said "millefeuille," a delectable French pastry, also called a Napoleon, that involves layers of puff pastry and cream. It's topped with an icing that alternates with chocolate and vanilla stripes. When I spent a good bit of time in France as a child, I had these every chance I could get. But they aren't easy to find here.
I finally made it a few weeks ago with my girls. My order was ready - that millefeuille - when we got to the cashier. My daughters struggled as they stared at the glass case filled with colorful French and Mediterranean pastries and desserts. Would they get the cannoli or one of the many slices of layer cakes or the croissant or the cookie or the baklava or the petit fours or the ... and the list goes on.
Everything is made on site, I was told when we were there. According to the bakery's website, Abdel Kader was trained at a French culinary school and has been serving the Triangle for the last decade (the shop was formerly Almadina Bakery and is part of a strip of ethnic shops). The cakes are made from original recipes.
We sat down with our order - a cannoli, millefeuille and a slice of chocolate cake - and dug in. They were all beautiful and delicious. This is a simple place with some pretty incredible and complicated pastries.
We'll be back.
