Destination: Galaxy Fun Park
For parents seeking indoor play options - and birthday party venues - for their kids, Galaxy Fun Park, north Raleigh's newest indoor play place, is big news.

The business, which opens for the first time to the public at 10 a.m., Friday, gathers a collection of amusement rides and activities that will keep kids entertained for hours - or as much as your wallet will allow. There are trampolines, sure. But there's also go-karts, a ropes course, laser tag and more.
There's no admission charge here. Instead, you pay based on the activities you're interested in (a combo pass offers a discount). Trampoline time costs between $8 and $18 depending on the jumpers age and the time they'll be jumping. The other attractions are either $5 or $8.
Galaxy Fun Park is at 14460 Falls of Neuse Rd. And, since there's so much stuff here, let's list it.
Here's what they have:
- 10,000-square-feet of trampolines, including a bag jump (instead of the foam pit you find at other trampoline parks); dodgeball courts and a dunk zone with basketball hoops.
- A four-level soft play area called Mission Control Station, which is designed for kids that are 54 inches or under. You might not be able to follow them completely through the space, but mesh walls make it easy to see them having fun. I saw lots of obstacles, tubes, a slide and pieces they can spin around in. There's a seating area for parents at the entrance to the space with a gate so you don't have to worry about your young child running out without you.
- A 15,000-square-foot track for electric go-karts. Eight go-karts can zoom around the track at one time. This isn't a huge track and you're not going incredibly fast, but there were plenty of smiles in those cars as I watched them maneuver around during a preview day this week. You must be at least 10 years old and 56 inches to drive your own go-kart. Passengers must be at least four years old and 36 inches tall. Their driver must be at least 18 years or older. Passengers ride for free when they are under 10 years old and meet the minimum height and age requirement.
- An indoor ropes course that rises almost two stories off the ground. If you've been to Go Ape or other ropes courses, don't expect that kind of challenge, but is a short zip line and about seven other stations, including wobbly bridges and ropes. You must be at least 48 inches tall to participate on the ropes course and be wearing tightly laced sneakers.
- An Orbital Spin Zone which features bumper cars that spin 360 degrees. This was, by far, my tween's favorite attraction here. You'll need to be five years old and at least 36 inches tall to drive your own car here. They do have four small seats that they can attach to individual rides for younger kids. To be a passenger, you must be ages 3 to 7 and be no more than 65 pounds and 60 inches. Passengers ride for free if they are under five years old.
- Laser tag, featuring black lights, two-story spaceships and a place to refuel. You must be at least 40 inches tall and five years old for this one.
- A lounge where parents, for instance, can watch the action from a second story. The lounge has lots of seating and TVs.
The space, a former Kroger, which measures 60,000 square feet, is spacious and fun with a space theme. There were a couple of Galaxy Fun Park robot mascots walking around when we were there.
A cafe features typical amusement park fare. A family-sized pepperoni pizza is $14.99, for instance. A hot dog is $3.99. A bottle of water is $3. They also sell beer and wine.
Galaxy Fun Park will start booking birthday parties on Friday. Track out camps also are planned. And the space also offers options for youth groups, lock-ins, fundraisers and other groups who want to get together in the same space.
