Posted — UpdatedWARSAW, N.C. — The deputy fire chief in the Duplin County town of Warsaw was charged Wednesday with stealing more than $300,000 from the fire department.
Joseph Allan Burgette, 42, was charged with eight counts of embezzlement. He was released after posting a $40,000 bond.
Police said Burgette, who also served as treasurer of the volunteer Warsaw Fire Department, had been misappropriating money since 2005. Fellow firefighters notified the fire chief of their concerns, and the case was turned over to Warsaw police to investigate.
Burgette is no longer with the fire department.
