RALEIGH, N.C. — Democratic strategist Nation Hahn and his wife, fundraiser Jamie Hahn, were hospitalized Tuesday after a bizarre stabbing attack Monday afternoon at their Raleigh home.

Jamie Hahn was in critical condition at WakeMed. Sources close to the family say Jamie has been gravely injured.

Police say the suspect is Jonathon Wayne Broyhill, a longtime friend of the couple. Friends say Broyhill was best man at their 2009 wedding.

He's been charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Broyhill also was injured in the incident and is hospitalized in serious condition.

There's no indication yet what prompted the attack. Raleigh police say the information they've gathered to date "indicates the events underlying the incident were not domestic in nature."

Both Hahns are well-known figures in political circles in Raleigh.

Nation Hahn is director of engagement at New Kind and has worked on several high-profile campaigns, including the opposition to the state's same-sex marriage ban in 2012.

Jamie Hahn's fundraising firm is Sky Blue Strategies. She worked for Congressman Brad Miller in the last few cycles.

Broyhill worked with her at the firm, fundraising on some campaigns.

UPDATE: The Hahn and Kirk families have  issued the following statement:
Jamie Hahn is fighting for her life and Nation, her husband, is by her side.
Our families and her friends are devastated. We deeply appreciate the thoughts and expressions of love we have received.

Jamie is a strong and courageous young woman and a bright light to us all. Pray for her.
