LAURINBURG, N.C. — The state Division of Water Quality has given the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport Commission a deadline to clean sludge from Scotland County wetlands.

The airport has until May 25 to get rid of waste that was dumped last fall from the airport's wastewater treatment facility, officials said. The state issued the deadline because the clean-up wasn't proceeding as quickly as expected, officials said.

Authorities said they suspect the treatment plant's former supervisor, Gary Arnett, of dumping the sludge into Shoe Heel Creek.
