Dancing and wagging

Two videos about North Carolina government have been making the rounds today. First, a video posted through CNN's iReport feature shows lawmakers dancing near the end of session. Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert "tips his hat" at the N.C. General Assembly.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A couple of videos are making the rounds in North Carolina political circles today.

The first came from a CNN iReport feature, which lets users upload their own videos and stories. The "report," posted anonymously, suggests that Republican lawmakers were dancing to celebrate their accomplishments.

Not really.

The video in question was captured on the second-to-last day of session. House members were waiting for bills to come over from the Senate or be processed out of committee – delays are frequent and long at the end of session. During the recess, a longtime aide to Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam, Christin Danchi, was invited to serenade the House. She played a couple of classical pieces as well as some faster fiddle tunes. Danchi is headed for music school in violin at Carnegie Mellon this fall.

A few Republican lawmakers danced a little while she was playing one of her faster pieces.

While there might be an argument over whether this was proper decorum, it is far from the zaniest antic to arise toward the end of session. Prior session have included at least one lawmaker singing Johnny Cash tunes a cappella through the microphone usually used for debates..

Next up was a clip from the Colbert Report, in which the faux-conservative talk show host offered a "tip of my hat" to North Carolina over the recently passed omnibus firearms law.

"Now you can bring guns to playgrounds. And folks we need them, because the monkey bars are well-known Al-Qaeda training grounds," Colbert quipped.
