Daily deal websites offer an easy way to get 50% off deals on activities all around town and online including dining, bowling, facials, massages, movies, haircuts, clothes, shoes, toys, mani/pedis, concerts, ice skating, jewelery, electronics, oil changes, house painting, art classes, wine tastings, bounce house admission, dance lessons, horseback riding outings, special events and so much more.

If you have wondered how these sites work and which sites to sign up for, here's an explanation and list of sites to consider.

How they work:

When you sign up to receive e-mails from the various deal sites, they will send an e-mail each day to let you know the deals of the day. If you see a deal that interests you, click on it to read more details. If you want to get the deal, click the button for purchasing the deal. In most cases, you buy the deal and pay via credit card then and there through the deal site. Usually within 24 hours, you will get an e-mail letting you know that your voucher is ready to print. You then print the voucher and present it at the business to redeem any time before it expires. For instance, the deal may be "$10 for a $20 voucher" to your favorite restaurant. You pay the $10 online through the deal site and 24 hours later you can print a certificate for the $20 voucher. When you are ready to redeem the voucher, just take it into the restaurant and you will get $20 off your meal. You only paid $10 for the certificate, but you get $20 off - a savings of 50%! Some of the deals are a little less than 50% savings and sometimes the savings are as high as a 70% off.

If you like to travel, some of these sites, like Groupon and LivingSocial, offer vacations at 50% off discounts.

In some cases, including SaveCity.com, the deal is free to get and you just present the coupon at the location to get the discount. For instance, they may offer a deal for "Buy 2 entrees, get a free appetizer." Just add the deal to your SaveCity account and then print it out when you are ready to go to the restaurant. There is no money required upfront in order to print the deal.

For all the daily deal sites, make sure you read the fine print. Sometimes the vouchers are only good on weekdays or for lunch or dinner only, for instance. They all have an expiration date as well.

Here are some of the most popular daily deal sites. I have used many of them for years and have purchased a bunch of half price (or better) deals through them.
