MAGNOLIA, N.C. — Sampson County District Attorney Dewey Hudson dismissed a murder charge against a man in the death of his nephew.

Sheriff's deputies originally charged Leamon Devon Becton, 68, with murder after Demetrius Becton, 36, was shot and killed during a Sept. 21 family gathering.

"The Sampson County Sheriff's Department investigated the case and properly charged Leamon Becton," Hudson said. He dismissed the charge based on the nature of the incident and Demetrius Becton's "violent reputation," Hudson said.

"After a review of the evidence, the circumstances are such that I do not believe a jury would find Leamon Becton guilty," the district attorney stated in a press release.
