FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities in Virginia captured a man wanted for the kidnapping of a 6-year-old child in Cumberland County.

Deputies took Richard Lee Carmichael Jr., 20, of 2503 Slater Ave., into custody Tuesday night in Virginia and brought him back to North Carolina. Authorities said Carmichael had picked up the girl from the Ferguson Easley Elementary School on May 10.

Investigators said Carmichael was not given permission to pick up the child and had been served with a no-trespassing order from school officials.

Authorities said the child believed her mother was driving the car and got in the vehicle with Carmichael and drove away. Her mother saw the event and called deputies, who tried to stop Carmichael's vehicle. He abandoned the car and fled on foot, leaving the child behind.

Carmichael is charged with first-degree kidnapping and second-degree trespassing. He was being held in the Cumberland County Jail on $50,000 bond.
