SANFORD, N.C. — Fire ripped through one of Sanford's most popular restaurants early Tuesday, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded to the Fairview Dairy Bar, at 109 Carbonton Road near downtown Sanford, at about 3:40 a.m. after a Sanford police officer saw that the restaurant was on fire.

It wasn't clear what caused the blaze, but no injuries were reported. When crews arrived, the front of the restaurant was engulfed in flames.

Lee County investigators asked for assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation to determine a cause.

The Flame Steakhouse, which is next door to Fairview Dairy Bar, was damaged by smoke from the blaze, officials said.

Known for its ice cream, Fairview Dairy Bar is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
