MerleFest draws thousands to Wilkesboro each spring
WILKESBORO, N.C. — MerleFest organizers announced attendees to the Sept. 16-19 festival must either show proof of being fully vaccinated or test negative for COVID-19 no more than 72 hours before the event.

The western North Carolina festival features Americana, bluegrass, folk and roots music and is known for its family-friendly environment. It is known for drawing thousands to Wilkesboro each year.

The announcement, which comes five weeks before the festival, provides enough time for attendees to become fully vaccinated.

Organizers said the strict policy is directly related to the contagious Delta variant.

"Safety first," said festival director, Ted Hagaman. "After many conversations with public health officials, it's clear that the smartest and safest change we can make is to require vaccinations or proof of a negative test."
