WASHINGTON, N.C. — A New York couple has been arrested on charges that they stole from a Washington woman trying to recover from Hurricane Irene, police said Friday.

The woman told police Tuesday that the couple offered to help repair her storm-damaged home, and she later found that cash and other items were stolen from her room, police said.

Investigators determined that the couple was traveling under phony names and alerted police in Albany, N.Y., where the couple was arrested after getting off a bus, police said. Several stolen items were recovered.

Stephanie Webb Callahan, 30, and Anthony S. Callahan, 33, both of Messena, N.Y., were charged with felony larceny and were awaiting extradition to North Carolina, police said. Additional charges are expected.
