RALEIGH, N.C. — Bright sunshine is on tap across central and eastern North Carolina to finish the work week, but rain is headed toward the area on what will end up being a cool, dreary weekend.

Friday's high temperatures will be below normal despite the sun, topping out in the upper 60s after starting in the upper 30s in some areas.

"It's been quite a while since we've had such a cold morning, but we've rebounded nicely thanks to the bright sun," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "Get outside today and enjoy some of this beautiful weather, because the next two days will include plenty of rain and cold temperatures."

A large system will push through the Deep South during the day Friday, and clouds will arrive in the Triangle by early Saturday morning.

Rain chances will increase gradually throughout the morning Saturday, Gardner said.

"Our rain chances will be above 50 percent throughout the afternoon and evening, as much as 90 percent in some spots," she said. "If you have to do anything outside Saturday, get it done early."

Daytime highs will struggle to hit 60 degrees thanks to the rain.

Clouds and light rain will linger across the area on Sunday, although temperatures could rebound a bit into the low 60s.

Sunshine will return on Monday and Tuesday, and daytime highs will return to the upper 60s.
