Contest winners

My fifth grade teacher put a memorable comment on the back of my report card: “Bill must learn he cannot ALWAYS be a winner.” I guess I’m both blessed and cursed by this competitive spirit. It has served me well over the years in terms of journalistic, musical and athletic accomplishments. But the truth is Mrs. Cowan was right. Sometimes defeat is going to sting you.

I thought about that quote as I watched the end of the UNC-Duke basketball game. As a Tar Heel grad it pained me to watch Nolan Smith and Seth Curry carve away at Carolina’s lead and ultimately hand the victory to Duke in an amazing second half comeback. But you’ve got to hand it to Coach K and company. That must have been some kind of rousing half time speech in the Duke locker room. Still, the young Tar Heels have nothing to be ashamed of. They are back after a disappointing year and could easily make a run for the conference title and beyond. They are playing some great ball and I love the team chemistry.

With that catharsis out of the way I would like to ask you to share your post game comments on the latest Battle of the Blues.

And while you’re gathering your thoughts I wanted to announce the winner of the Predict the Score contest. justbecauz just beat the tip-off deadline with an almost perfect prediction of Duke 79, UNC 72. I’d also like to award a prize to dnrkearney2 for the 80 to 74 prediction. If the winners will send me their mailing addresses I would appreciate it. My email address is bleslie@wral.com
The previous day we ran a contest on The Big Game. We had a slew of great comments but I’ve got to give the top prize to tompooley2 who competes like a hero every day in the game of life. If Tom will send me his mailing address I will send him a prize as well.

I did want to send a special salute to Celt for his creative assessment of the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry.  Please read it for a good laugh.
