Construction, overcrowding pose problems for Wake schools

The crowding is evident in an increase in the number of capped schools, which will have limits placed on their populations. For the 2016-2017 school year, 15 schools will be capped, which is up from 11 schools last year.

Not only is space tight in some places, but construction money is tight, too. A 2013 building bond is not going as far as district leaders had hoped. A construction project at Garner High School, for example, is more than $7 million over budget.

District staff members said the cost of construction is on the rise. A vote Tuesday night could reallocate millions of dollars to keep other projects on track.
