Colbert ready to host Late Show, tells fans 'it's still me'
Fans of "The Colbert Report" know all about the character Stephen Colbert presented on late-night for nearly 10 years. He never broke from his act. But who should fans expect when Colbert shows up on the Late Show on Tuesday?
Posted — Updated“If you liked the last one, I hope you like the new one,” he said. “It’s still me. I’m just not a pundit who has to win all the time.”
Colbert is inheriting the theater, time slot and show owned for 22 years by David Letterman, which airs on WRAL-TV. He is bringing with him the same staff of writers and producers from his show on Comedy Central.
“We’re thinking of this as the next project we do together, and CBS has been great,” he said. “They’ve given us carte blanche. We can do whatever we want, so I hope we’re going to do a funny show.”
Political satire, the mainstay of his last show, will be around for "The Late Show."
“That’s been our bread and butter for the past 10 years, and what better time to being doing political satire than right now?” he said. “I just pray Donald Trump doesn’t burn out by Sept. 8. Please, eat well, sleep. Take care of yourself, Donald. We need you. America’s late night hosts need you.”
“People say, ‘Are you anxious over the show?’ And listen, I know it’s going to be a big job, but we’ve done 10 years of late night show. I’m just most anxious about going to do it. So I couldn’t wait any more … No more simulator, please. Put me in the jet.”
