Coast Guard locates operator of capsized boat

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard on Friday said that the operator of a capsized catamaran was safe on shore.

A charter boar crew called Station Oak Island watchstanders Wednesday morning , saying they had found a capsized 18-foot white Hobie Cat catamaran with a multicolored sail about 23 miles of the Cape Fear River.

The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter, an airplane and a rescue ship to search the area for the boat's operator. They also contacted marinas and boat rental agencies in North and South Carolina to determine the identity of the vessel and its operator.

The catamaran's owner contacted the Coast Guard on Friday to inform authorities that his son and another person were aboard the boat when it capsized, authorities said. When the pair was unable to right the vessel, they swam to shore and were uninjured, the man told authorities.
