Stormy skies hold temperatures in check

Posted — UpdatedRALEIGH, N.C. — Clouds will dominate Thursday in the Triangle, and there is a chance for thunderstorms at any time, WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said.
A patch of showers moved through Durham County during the morning commute, and severe thunderstorms popped up across Wake County in the late morning hours, bringing flooding to low-lying areas along Glenwood Avenue and Leesville Road.
By 2 p.m., skies had cleared over the Triangle, but the chance for storms creeps back up for the late afternoon before clearing after sunset, Wilmoth said.
"Keep the umbrella with you throughout the day as it will likely come in handy at times," she said.
The mercury barely topped 80 degrees, a 20-point swing from earlier in the week. The overnight low was forecast to dip into the 60s.
"The bonus of having the cloud cover and rain chance is that it won't be too hot with highs staying in the 80s," she said.
