CLINTON, N.C. — A Clinton police officer faces a departmental investigation after he was charged with passing a stopped school bus.

Lt. Robert Dalton was driving a Clinton Police Department vehicle when he passed the school bus on East College Street in Salemburg at about 7:30 a.m. on May 15, according to authorities.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol issued a citation to Dalton six days later, and he is scheduled to appear in traffic court on July 28.

Susan Warren, a spokeswoman for Sampson County Schools, said video from inside the school bus was forwarded to the Highway Patrol. The bus didn't have a stop-arm camera, she said.

Clinton Police Chief Jay Tilley said Tuesday that he takes the incident "very seriously" and has launched a separate internal investigation.

Dalton, 36, has been employed with the Clinton Police Department since 2005 and is assigned to its Operations Division.
