Clayton house under construction set ablaze
A Clayton police officer on patrol Monday morning found a fire at one house under construction and what appeared to be an unsuccessful attempt to set a second one ablaze.
Posted — UpdatedThe fire at 102 Rolling Meadows Drive in the Summerlyn subdivision was discovered shortly after 6 a.m., and the Clayton Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire, police said.
Police discovered that the adjacent house at 116 Rolling Meadows Drive had been broken into and that someone tried to set a fire there. The house sustained minor damage, police said.
Both houses are under construction and are unoccupied, police said. They are owned by Raleigh-based Savvy Homes.
The Clayton Police Department, the Clayton Fire Department and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the fires.
Police Chief Glen Allen said it's too early to say whether the fires are connected to November and December fires at homes under construction in the Chandler's Ridge subdivision in Clayton.
Anyone who saw suspicious vehicles or people in that area between 4:30 and 6 a.m. Monday or who has information about the fires is asked to call the Clayton Police Department at 919-553-4611 or Clayton Crime Stoppers at 919-359-TIPZ (8479).
