LUMBERTON, N.C. — An 8-year-old child and two adults were killed in a one-vehicle crash along Interstate 95 in Robeson County Friday morning.

Lumberton police said the wreck was reported about 6:30 a.m., but they believe the 2003 Lexus sport-utility vehicle went off the road hours earlier. One lane of I-95 northbound was closed until just after 9 a.m.

Jerry Wayne Thornburg, 59, of Pawleys Island, S.C.; Grace Carl, 39, of Georgetown, S.C., and her son, Christopher Carl, 8, were pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Thornburg and Carl were a couple.

The wreckage of the SUV, which was registered to Thornburg in South Carolina, was found about 50 feet off the highway in some trees. Investigators think Thornburg was driving north at about 75 mph before the wreck.

The cause of the wreck has not yet been determined, but police said alcohol or drugs were not involved. The SUV did not leave any skid marks on the roadway before it left the interstate.
