COATS, N.C. — One man was charged after a teenager was struck and killed by a car in Harnett County on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 4:30 p.m. on Redhill Church Road near Tobacco Barn Lane in an unincorporated part of Harnett County.

Authorities said that driver Cameron Pipkin, 23, of 6528 N.C. Highway 27 in Coats, was traveling south on Redhill Church Road when he ran off the right shoulder, hitting James McLeod, 14, of 2688 Ashe Ave. in Dunn, from behind.

McLeod died at the scene.

Pipkin was charged with misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle and careless and reckless driving. He was taken to the Harnett County Detention Center, where he was being held under a $1,000 bond.

Authorities said they believe that Pipkin fell asleep at the wheel prior to the collision and said that speed was a factor in the accident.
