PITTSBORO, N.C. — Chatham County Schools Superintendent Ann Hart said Tuesday that she would retire from the school district at the end of the year.

Hart plans to take a job in Atlanta with AVID, a program that targets middle-performing students and those who will be first-generation college students. High schools in Chatham County are in their second year of using the program.

“I am honored to have been a part of the successes, accomplishments and challenges in Chatham County Schools," she said in a statement. "My work here during the last two-and-a-half years has affirmed my belief that the traditions of achievement, excellence and determination will continue as the foundation of this school district. I believe it is poised for excellence."

Hart came to Chatham County in July 2005. She has more than 30 years of experience as an educator in North and South Carolina.
