YOUNGSVILLE, N.C. — A high-speed chase Monday afternoon ended in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 401 near Youngsville, authorities said.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office was doing a welfare check on a Knightdale man after his relatives said he had threatened suicide, but when deputies spotted him in Rolesville, he fled in a black BMW, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The BMW reached speeds up to 140 mph on Tarboro Road as the chase headed into Franklin County, and when the car turned on to U.S. 401, authorities deployed stop sticks in an effort to disable the car.

The BMW tried to avoid the stop sticks and slammed into a GMC pickup, authorities said.

The pickup driver was taken to Franklin Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The BMW driver was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh, where authorities said he tried to flee again but was recaptured.

Charges are pending in the case.
