Charges dropped against suspect in Chapel Hill toddler's death
All charges have been dropped against the first man arrested in the Christmas Day shooting of a 1-year-old Chapel Hill girl, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Posted — UpdatedShaquille Oneill Davis, 22, had been charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in the death of Maleah Williams.
The girl was shot in the head in the 700 block of Trinity Court as she played outside on Christmas, and she died three days later at UNC Hospitals.
Police said shots were fired from a vehicle as it was leaving an apartment complex, and one of the bullets struck the toddler. Witnesses said the shooting might have been retaliation for an argument that occurred earlier Friday and that Maleah was an innocent victim.
Ramone Jamarr Alston, 22, and Pierre Je Bron Moore, 23, have been charged with first-degree murder in the case.
Prosecutors never upgraded the attempted murder charge against Davis as they continued to investigate the shooting, and they said conflicting evidence led to the charges being dismissed. The investigation remains open, meaning other charges could be filed in the future, they said.
Davis remains in the Orange County jail, serving a 90-day sentence for a probation violation.
