RALEIGH, N.C. — A man charged with terrorizing patrons at three Raleigh hotels Saturday night has a history of violent threats and possibly mental illness.

Police say Jacob Vanderburg, 27, waved a chainsaw around, threatening three people at a Red Roof Inn, a Super 8 and a Claremont Inn, all on South Saunders Street in Raleigh.

The chainsaw marks on the door of room 114 at the Super 8 are evidence of the terror people inside must have felt.

In July 2020, Vanderburg was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., for carrying a loaded gun on a beach.

Shacked magazine shared video of that arrest, which shows Vanderburg, who is white, yelling about liberals and Black Lives Matter protests.

He threatens those who watched it happen saying, "I'm coming back for you. You understand me?"

According to Shacked, Vanderburg was arrested on suspicion of possession of a loaded firearm and possession of illegal high capacity magazine.

A staffer at Red Roof Inn called police, but Vanderburg left the scene before they arrived.

Police say a man used a chainsaw to damage doors at a Raleigh hotel.

Later Saturday night, Garner police say, Vanderburg rammed the Lowe's on U.S. Highway 70, breaking glass and stole another chainsaw.

He was arrested Sunday morning by Raleigh police on nine charges, including going armed to the terror of the people, kidnapping and assault. He was being held under a $270,000 bond and was expected to make a first court appearance on Monday afternoon.

He also faces charges in Garner for theft of the chainsaw and damage to the Lowe's property.

After his California arrest, Vanderburg was released on a $30,000 bond, but then put on a psychiatric hold. He never showed up in court.

It is not yet clear what Vanderburg was doing in Raleigh. It appears that he was living with a sister and brother-in-law in Garner. WRAL News reporters have called and visited the home, but they have not yet responded.
