Threat for severe weather continues through evening

According to the National Weather Service, the entire state could see severe weather through Sunday morning. In and around the Triangle, the threat is considered "enhanced," WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said.

"We could see locally damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, and we can't rule out hail or isolated tornadoes are possible," he said. "We will have to keep an eye on developing showers and storms throughout the day."

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down in Lee County at about 6 p.m.

"We expect scattered coverage of showers and storms to become more widespread through the evening," Moss said. "We'll likely end up with clusters, bands and maybe a line or two of storms."

"There will be a lot of lightning associated with these storms," WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said. "You will want to seek shelter as these storms move through the area."

Central North Carolina was under a flash flood watch until 8 a.m. Sunday, as the storms moved through the area.

"We could see areas of flooding associated with the thunderstorms as they continue to push through our viewing area," Wilmoth said.

Saturday's high temperatures topped out at 88 degrees at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, marking the first time daytime highs will fail to reach 90 degrees in more than two weeks.

Showers and storms could linger into the late evening and early-morning hours on Sunday, Moss said, but by sunrise most of the precipitation should be well east of the area.

Sunshine will replace the clouds to close out the weekend, and much more pleasant air will filter into the region behind the front. Highs on Sunday will climb only into the mid-80s.

"It will be breezy and much nicer across the entire area," Moss said. "You'll really notice a big difference as we close out the weekend."

Highs will be back near 90 degrees on Monday as sunshine stays put, and highs will return to the low 90s for the rest of the work week.
