CARY, N.C. — They say there is a holiday for everything, so I was thrilled to learn that Saturday is National Sandwich Day. It offered an excuse to bail on leftovers and head to one of my favorite delis for lunch.
It should come as no surprise that some of the best delis in the Triangle are in Cary, serving the growing population of transplants from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
For a true "Yankee" treat, try New York Bagel and Deli III on Kildare Farm or Manhattan Cafe on High House.
The bread is the key. It's got to be flaky and crispy on the outside but with a chewy interior. Subway may have refined the ability to stack your own sandwich, but the family-owned places that slice their own rise above that chain experience.
