ATLANTA — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new international travel rules Tuesday that they hope will help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Passengers arriving to the U.S. from other countries must now provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result no more than three days before their flight departs. As an alternative, passengers may also provide proof that they have fully recovered from COVID-19 prior to boarding their flight.

"Variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus continue to emerge in countries around the world, and there is evidence of increased transmissibility of some of these variants," the CDC said in a statement. "With the US already in surge status, the testing requirement for air passengers will help slow the spread of the virus as we work to vaccinate the American public."
