DAYTON, OHIO — A Cary woman and her 5-year-old granddaughter died Sunday when the family's minivan ran off the side of a highway in Ohio, authorities said.

The family was heading to Chicago for a funeral when Rubena Elahi, 27, of Cary, fell asleep at the wheel at about 4 a.m., authorities said. The 2006 Honda Odyssey ran off northbound Interstate 75 north of Dayton, Ohio, hit a tree and ended up in a ditch.

Elahi's mother-in-law, Khurshid Chaudhry, 65, and her daughter Azan were killed in the crash. Chaudhry was in the front passenger seat, while Azan was lying across the third-row seats, authorities said.

Elahi and her husband, Muhammad Chaudhry, 28, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Muhammad Chaudhry was seated in the second row with the couple's 2-year-old daughter, Izna, on his lap. The girl was treated at Dayton Children's Hospital for minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed.
