Girl Rising
If Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teen and Nobel Prize winner who has fought for girls education, has inspired your tween or teen, you might want to head over to The Cary Theater for a screening of "Girl Rising" this Friday.

The PG-13-rated documentary tells the story of nine girls living in the developing world who have overcome odds to achieve their dreams.

There's Sokha from Cambodia, an orphan who survived by picking through garbage in a dump, according to the film's website. She eventually got to school and became a star student. And there's Azmera of Ethiopia, who refuses an arranged marriage at age 13 and finds a way to go to school.

Their stories are narrated by popular actors and artists, including Meryl Streep, Alicia Keys, Anne Hathaway and Cate Blanchett.

The film is rated PG-13 with mentions of topics such as arranged marriages and child slavery so it's not for all ages. Reviewers on Common Sense Media say it's best for mature tweens and teens. But I do think it would be an interesting mom-daughter outing.
The movie is set for 7 p.m., Friday, at The Cary Theater. Tickets are $5. A panel discussion is planned after the movie. The movie's website has a lot more information and detail about it and the group behind it.
