Cary's Walnut Street getting makeover; construction begins Monday
One of the busiest stretches of road in Cary is getting a facelift over the next year and a half, and construction is scheduled to begin Monday.
Posted — UpdatedWalnut Street carries about 35,000 vehicles a day, and the road is especially busy between Cary Towne Center and Crossroads Plaza, two of the more popular shopping areas in southwestern Wake County.
"It is crazy all the time. It never stops," driver Lea Webb said of Walnut Street.
Between now and the summer of 2016, crews from Fred Smith Company in Raleigh will widen the ramp from northbound U.S. Highway 1/64 to allow dual-turn lanes in both directions.
They will also widen the bridge over the highway, adding a third northbound lane to increase capacity, and also add sidewalks.
Crosswalks will be installed at some of the busier intersections near the highway. The cost of the project was about $4 million, an amount supported by the 2012 Cary Community Investment bond funds.
Town of Cary engineer Robert Shultes said the changes will help improve traffic flow and improve safety for pedestrians, especially during the busy holiday shopping season.
"Traffic is busy during the holiday season, and this project will improve those conditions once complete," he said.
Drivers can expect daytime lane closures on Buck Jones Road and Walnut Street between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Nighttime lane closures will also occur between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Ramps from U.S. 1/64 and Crossroads Boulevard could also be closed between 9 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.
