HOLLY RIDGE, N.C. — A Cary man died Sunday in a single-engine plane crash near Holly Ridge, authorities said.

Dillard Powell, 89, took off from Topsail Airpark, off U.S. Highway 17 in Pender County, at about 3:25 p.m., heading to Albert J. Ellis Airport, near Richlands, authorities said.

The plane was reported missing three hours later, and emergency workers found the wreckage at about 10:30 p.m. about a mile from Topsail Airpark, authorities said. Powell was the only person aboard.

Federal Aviation Administration officials were headed to the scene Monday to investigate the crash.
