Cary holds line on taxes in new budget

The Cary Town Council on Thursday approved a $348 million budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year that maintains the local property tax rate at 33 cents per $100 valuation.

CARY, N.C. — The Cary Town Council on Thursday approved a $348 million budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year that maintains the local property tax rate at 33 cents per $100 valuation.

The budget, which spends 3.7 percent more than the 2009-10 budget, includes 12 new positions. Four people will staff the new Cary Community Arts Center, which is scheduled to open next spring, and the police department plans to hire three officers for a neighborhood crime prevention program and a fourth to patrol the new Mills Park Middle School.

Thirty-one vacant positions have been eliminated with the passage of the budget, which officials said would save Cary $1.5 million.

The budget also includes $128 million for the state-mandated Western Wake Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, $2.7 million for street improvements and other transportation initiatives and $700,000 for park renovations.
