The anniversary of 9/11 has become a reminder of the sacrifices first responders make in the United States. In Cary, residents found a way to show their appreciation for what they do for their community.

Maria Cervania, and many other within the community, have joined together to build a garden at Cary Fire Station No. 5 in remembrance of those who lost their lives 14 years ago, and to thank the local first responders for the work they do on a daily basis.

“They are critical to the quality of life we have in Cary,” Cervania said.

Sarah Justice, with the Town of Cary said it’s not hard finding volunteer for community projects.

Cormac Lynch, 12, of Boy Scout Troop 213 said even though building a garden may not be the most enjoyable activity for a kid, it’s a gesture that everyone can be proud of.

“Is this any fun for a young person? No, but it does make you feel good about yourself,” Lynch said. “That’s important.”

The firefighters at Station 5 are on 24-hour shifts. Now some of their meals will come from the garden that the Cary community built.

“You come to work every day and try to make a difference in people’s lives,” said Captain Kevin Stewart. “Sometimes you do and sometimes you don’t. You have people come back and show you that you are making a difference in the community. That is better than any paycheck you get.”
