CARY, N.C. — The town council approved a $214 million budget Thursday evening that will result in the rise of utility rates for citizens.

The budget – a 26 percent decrease from last year’s fiscal year budget  – will leave water and sewer customers seeing 7.9 percent rate increase – about $5.55 more a month for a residential customer using about 7,000 gallons of water.

The tax rate will remain one of the lowest in the Triangle at 33 cents per $100 of valuation.

Residential garbage, recycling and yard waste fees will stay at a total of $14 per month.

The budget adds a water resources engineer but holds more than two dozen vacant positions open for the coming year.
