CARTHAGE, N.C. — A Carthage man was arrested Wednesday night following a three-hour standoff with Moore County deputies, authorities said.

Deputies received a report at about 8 p.m. of shots being fired during a domestic situation at a Carthage home, and when they arrived, neighbors told them a man inside the house had a gun and had fired several times, authorities said.

As deputies surrounded the house, a woman came outside and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The man inside then fired shots at the deputies, and the standoff ensued.

After deputies failed to persuade the man to surrender, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team deployed tear gas, forcing him outside, where he was taken into custody.

No deputies or emergency personnel were injured during the incident.

Xavier Tyrone McQuitter, 25, was charged with assault with a firearm on law enforcement, discharging a firearm to incite fear, resisting a public officer and assault on a female. He was being held without bond in the Moore County jail.
