ZEBULON, N.C. — A bystander who was shot during a fight in Zebulon late Thursday has died, police said Monday.

Jonathan Trevon Smith, 19, died Sunday evening at WakeMed, Zebulon Police Chief Timothy Hayworth said.

Police said Alonza Jamal Hunter and Jomiya Gabrielle Beckwith had an altercation outside Smith's home, at 712 Shepard School Road, when Hunter pulled out a gun and started firing. One shot hit Smith, who was sitting in a car outside the house, in the head, police said.

Hunter, 21, of 6470 Winters Road in Middlesex, was initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in the case, but police have upgraded the charge to first-degree murder. They also have charged Beckwith, 19, of 1225 Pampass Drive in Zebulon, with first-degree murder in the case.

Both were being held without bond Monday in the Wake County jail.
