Caterpillar lays off workers in Clayton, Sanford
PEORIA, ILL. — Caterpillar Inc. plans to lay off employees at its Triangle locations, a spokesman for the heavy-equipment manufacturer said Friday.

Spokesman Jim Dugan declined to say how many jobs would be cuts at manufacturing plants in Clayton and Sanford and an engineering office in Cary.

"We think in the next six months or so there's likely to be some job reductions as we move some of these pieces around globally to get things at that more competitive stage," Dugan said.

Caterpillar has slashed jobs in recent months, including a round of cuts in Clayton and Sanford last winter, to weather the slowdown in construction amid a global recession.

Company officials said this week that the moves have positioned Caterpillar for a return to profitability once the economy improves.
