N.C. Unemployment Rate Increases Slightly to 5%
The work force is growing faster than jobs are being created, the state Employment Security Comission says.

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina’s unemployment rate climbed to 5.0 percent in July, the highest rate since September 2006.
The jobless rated inched upward from 4.9 percent in August, with 225,155 people out of work, according to data from the state Employment Security Commission.
North Carolina’s rate remained higher than the national jobless rate for the fifth consecutive month. The U.S. unemployment rate is 4.6 percent.
However, the number of people working in July – nearly 4.3 million people – is 45,000 more than a year ago, noted ESC Chairman Harry Payne, Jr. The number of new jobs has not kept pace with the work force, which has increased by more than 56,000.
“While the unemployment rate has been fairly consistent since this time last year, employment has climbed significantly,” Payne said.
The state added more than 3,800 professional and business services magazine in July. The biggest drop came among government workers – down by 25,800. The ESC noted many of those government workers where school system employees who do not work during the summer.
