Unemployment Drops to Lowest Rate in 9 Months
North Carolina’s unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent in January, the lowest mark since last April, according to statistics released Thursday by the state’s Employment Security Commission.

For the sixth straight month, employment increased in the state.
“Following the holiday season, the state’s employment figures remained strong,” ESC Chairman Harry Payne said in a statement. “Six straight months of employment growth has given North Carolina a new record level of those individuals working in our state. Diverse growth in numerous job sectors has helped increase employment in North Carolina.”
The state unemployment rate matched the U.S. rate for the first time since last July, when both were at 4.8 percent.
Total seasonally adjusted employment increased by 8,735 workers, to 4,302,717. Seasonally adjusted unemployment decreased in January by 12,433 workers, to 208,099.
Over the past year, unemployment has increased by 237 people. Overall employment increased by 107,905 workers since January 2006.
