Football fanatics and people just tuning in to catch the sports event of the year on Sunday will be treated to plenty of high-tech tools that provide instant graphics and statistics thanks to technology from Durham-based SportsMedia Technology.

SMT is a tech provider for many other major sports events and leagues ranging from auto racing to baseball.

For the Super Bowl in Indianapolis, SMT says it has worked with NBC to enable the network’s “Football Night in America” crew to go mobile rather than be confined to a studio.

In addition to the familiar lines inserted to plot first down yardage and live data feeds available on screen, SMT said it “customized” technology to take tools to the stadium:

  • Telestration for drawing of lines by the announcers
  • Digital Zoom
  • Tony Dungy’s Coaches Clicker for replays

SMT is also working with NBC to equip additional cameras for use of virtual tools.

“There is no more powerful show than the Super Bowl and it is on this stage that we have the opportunity to showcase our latest technology,” said SMT Chief Executive Officer Gerard J. Hall.
