Sheetz to bring new center, 254 jobs to Burlington

Convenience store chain Sheetz plans to build a distribution and food manufacturing center in Burlington that will create 254 jobs over the next six years, the governor’s office announced Wednesday.

The company said it will invest more than $32.8 million in the center, which will support the Pennsylvania-based company’s growing retail base in the South. The investment includes an $800,000 grant from the state’s One North Carolina Fund. The fund is allocated for industry recruitment and expansion.

“We appreciate the support we received from the Department of Commerce, Alamance County and the City of Burlington throughout this process,” Stan Sheetz, president and chief executive officer of Sheetz Inc., said in a statement. “North Carolina’s winning mix of a strong labor force, financial assistance, and excellent location will enable us to better serve our customers and expand our offerings in North Carolina and Virginia.”

The average annual payroll for the center is estimated at $7.4 million.

The state Economic Investment Committee on Wednesday voted to award Sheetz another special grant designed to grow jobs in North Carolina.

Under the terms of the Job Development Investment Grant, the company could earn as much as $1.9 million if it meets and sustains job creation targets over the next 12 years.
