Bumbo recalls 4 million baby seats

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today the recall of about 4 million Bumbo baby seats.

These are the very popular molded foam seats that allow small infants to sit up. The problem comes when babies are placed in the seats on raised surfaces such as a table or countertop and they fall off.

Back in October 2007, Bumbo seats were recalled to add more warnings against placing the seats on a raised surface. The back of the seat now has warnings and seats manufactured since 2008 have an additional label on the front of the seat warning against use on raised surfaces, according to a press release from the commission.

Even still, since then, there have been at least 50 incidents where babies fell from a Bumbo seat while on a table or other raised surface. Of those infants, 19 suffered skull fractures.

The commission and Bumbo also report that an additional 34 fell out of the seat and were injured while on the floor or at an "unknown elevation," the release says. Two of these incidents resulted in skull fractures, along with assorted bumps, bruises and minor injuries, it says.

So, while many of the babies were injured while on a raised surface, some were injured while sitting on the floor.

Bumbo has a free repair kit, which includes a restraint belt with a warning label, safe use instructions and a new warning sticker. The belt should always be used when a child is in the seat, the release says.
