RALEIGH, N.C. — Afternoon storms rolled through central North Carolina on Sunday, knocking out power and downing massive trees.

The storms left significant damage along Dunn Road in Raleigh, giving resident Dewey Perry quite the scare.

“I said, 'Is that some rain?' and I looked out the window and the tree was just rocking and turning,” said Perry. “I said 'My goodness.' All of a sudden I look at the tree and bam -- it came down.”

Perry had just left his car when the tree came crashing down.

"I’m okay," said Perry. "I was in the house looking out the window.”

Another fallen tree closed Dunn Road for several hours. Traffic had to be re-routed for much of Sunday evening.

Residents nearby could also be seen cleaning up.

Around 3,000 people were left without power in Wake County, and 2,000 others had outages in Chatham County.

It was horrible timing on a particularly hot Sunday, but for Perry, the timing was everything.

“It’s a good thing I had left the car because it happened so quickly," said Perry. "I had just got in the house maybe a few minutes and I looked back out and the tree came down.”

Duke Energy said power would be restored Sunday night.
