HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Construction crews in southern Wake County have started work to replace the bridge over Basal Creek on Bass Lake Road, and a detour could be in place for several months.

Drivers will be able to access homes and businesses on either side of the construction zone, but the road will be closed through mid-October, officials said.

A detour has been set up using Sunset Lake Road and Holly Springs Road.

The current bridge was built in 1954 and is considered "structurally deficient and functionally obsolete," officials said. The new bridge will be built to current design standards.

Officials said the bridge currently handles about 6,500 vehicles per day, a number expected to grow to 10,000 by 2035.
