Bragg parachutist killed in air show accident receives posthumous promotion
A 32-year-old member of the U.S. Army's Golden Knights parachute team who died Sunday has been posthumously promoted to master sergeant, Fort Bragg officials announced Thursday.
Posted — UpdatedCorey Hood, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died at about 4 p.m. Sunday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Officials said Hood collided with a member of the U.S. Navy's Leap Frog Team, who was also injured.
Witnesses said at least one of the men clipped the top of a high-rise apartment. The other man was treated for a broken leg.
Fort Bragg officials said Thursday that Hood was selected for promotion “for his demonstrated leadership abilities and tactical and technical expertise."
Lt. Col. Matthew Weinrich, the U.S. Army Parachute Team's commander, said Hood was a dedicated officer who dreamed of being a Golden Knight.
“Corey loved being a Golden Knight. He loved connecting the American people with their Army. He loved meeting with the people on the ground and sharing his Soldier story. Corey’s story was extraordinary because he was an extraordinary Soldier,” Weinrich said in a statement.
According to his biography, Hood had been a member of the Army for 10 years and has been awarded two Bronze Stars and two Meritorious Service Awards.
The unit is currently in a safety stand down in order to review procedures and processes within the unit, conduct team-focused training, participate in the accident investigation and pursue grief counseling as needed.
An investigation of Sunday's incident continues.
